Hi everyone! This is Manu Kalia. I’m a physical therapist and ayurvedic herbalist. Today I want to share with you guys about one of my favorite ayurvedic herb, ashwagandha. Ashwagandha is essentially the Indian ginseng.
The genus and species is Withania somnifera. Ashwagandha has been used in ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and I would have to say this is probably one of the top ten herbs or that I consider one of the top ten-ayurvedic herbs and also one of the most common ones used in ayurvedic medicines. Not only the ashwagandha has amazing qualities for improving overall health but it’s great for addressing various health problems.

One of the key qualities of ashwagandha is that it is an adaptogenic herb. It improves the ability of your system to handle internal and external stress. It essentially builds resilience of the system or it builds strength of the system to handle stress. I think that’s a pretty amazing quality that it has that it really improves the overall strength of the system to not only handle physical but emotional and psychological stress also.
The second important quality of ashwagandha is that it’s a potent analgesic and antiinflammatory, especially in terms of ayurvedic medicine.
It is used extensively in ayurvedic medicine as part of many formulations to address joint pains, arthritic conditions and also for post injury recovery and for overall strength and fitness.
So that is the other quality of ashwagandha with its ability to heal tissues, it’s like a natural anabolic herb, so it improves the muscle tone and power. So it has a positive anabolic effect not only in muscle but also on nervous system, it strengthens the nervous system.
Even the name ashwagandha stands for back, which imparts the strength of stallion. The genus and species isWithania somnifera and the word somnifera having to do with sleep, so it also affects the nervous system in terms of letting it relax and settle down which promotes restful sleep.
Ashwagandha has lots of qualities and I have mentioned here some of the key ones. I would have to say that this is one of my top ones and I have used it and I have had lots of patients benefiting from it, not just in term of recovery after injuries but just building overall strength and fitness also. I think it can be probably one of the most important herbs for most athletes as it can really help the recovery process.
