I hope you are doing well and getting ready for Christmas…for those of you who celebrate.
As promised I am going to share with you another Ayurvedic treatment I received during the first 2 weeks of my Panchakarma (Ayurvedic Detoxification and Rejuvenation Therapies) – check out my last email from a week ago for more on my trip to Kerala and Panchakarma.
Today is end of 3 weeks of Panchakarma and I have one more week left. The treatment I’m sharing with you finished about a week ago, but definitely deserves a special mention since so many of us in the modern world could benefit from it.
This is called Shiro Dhara where a stream of herbal oil, herbal buttermilk, herbal milk, herbal coconut water and even breast milk is poured on the forehead and head from a height of about 2 inches through a bundle of treads connected through a hole in the Dhara Patra (the container that holds the liquid – usually made of clay, silver or gold).
The duration of Dhara treatment can range from 30 minutes to 2+ hours depending on the condition of the patient or nature of the disease.
My treatment was called Takra Dhara (herbal buttermilk) and was given for 1 hour. Though, as I mentioned a lot of other liquids are used as well. In the West, we usually just use herbal oils depending on the patient’s constitution and specific disturbance.
Takra Dhara was very cooling and relaxing. Immediately after the treatment I had to take a shower. After the Takra Dhara I would feel a strange buzzing sensation in my head for the next few hours. Felt very grounded and able to go into deep meditation very easily. Definitely very relaxing and settling for the nervous system. Time seemed to slow down after the treatment.
The outer layer of skin (Epidermis) and nervous system are embryologically derived from the same tissue (ectoderm). This therapeutic technique also uses skin to affect the nervous system and I suspect the hormones as well. The dripping effect of the liquid on the skin combined with the specific properties of the liquid deliver the desired effect.
The treatment is used for various conditions ranging from nervous disorders, stress management, mental diseases, general debility, insomnia, high blood pressure and particularly in diseases or problems of organs above the neck.
Now off to other adventures and in my next message I will share another treatment. I want to hear from you guys, so let me know what you think about this treatment and if you have questions….
