Patellar tendonitis is an overuse injury to the patellar tendon that connects the bottom of your knee cap to the top of the shin bone. This tendon plays a very important role in your ability to straighten your lower leg for your daily activities, running, kicking a ball, squatting, etc.
Overuse and excessive wear/tear can cause this tendon and surrounding structures to become inflamed, swollen, thickened, irritated and weak. Quite often, I find that an initial injury which doesn’t heal properly can also result in a tendonitis over time.
From a holistic point of view, poor nutrition, weak digestion, impaired liver function and poor circulation or blockages in the system can also predispose someone to get tendonitis or impair the ability of the tissue to heal properly.
This condition is often called “ Jumpers knee ” often associated with athletic activities requiring excessive jumping like basketball and volleyball. However, this problem is not limited to athletes and can affect anyone.
What are the symptoms of Patellar tendonitis ?
Patellar tendonitis can cause pain to the patellar tendon, around the bottom part of the kneecap, stiffness, swelling and weakness of the knee and surrounding area. Often patients report pain with going up or down steps, pain when sitting with the knee bent, with squatting, kneeling, running, jumping, etc.
Treatment for patellar tendonitis
There are various treatments available for addressing this issue effectively.
- Rest is the most important treatment. Allowing the tissue to rest and not loading it will help in reducing pain and inflammation.
- Physical Therapy – exercises for flexibility and strengthening surrounding tissues, joint mobilizations, manual therapy.
- Natural anti inflammatory solutions like – turmeric, ashwagandha, ginger, guggulu, etc.
