How to treat knee pain

by Manu Kalia on February 9, 2012

Hey everyone, welcome to the new and updated site.  Looking forward to a great year with lots of new content on holistic medicine. I will be putting out a bunch of new videos on natural fitness and herbal therapies.

Knee problems seem to be one of the most common issues I treat in my practice and so am putting up a video on this problem.  There are lots of common sense guidelines in this video to help you learn about different knee problems, ranging from ACL injury, meniscus tears, knee arthritis, patellar tendonitis, patello-femoral joint irritation and general wear and tear problems.

I also go into common sense guidelines on how to prevent knee problems, avoid knee pain, recover from knee pain or injury and physical therapy guidelines that have worked for my patients.

Hope you enjoyed the video.  Don’t forget to leave a comment or question.

Share the video with loved ones and friends who might benefit from this info.  Also share it on Faceboook and also tweet it on Twitter as well and feel free to plus one on Google Plus as well, too.

All right, thank you so much for watching this video, it has been real pleasure to share this with you and I’ll see you inside the next one.  Stay tuned for lots of new stuff coming up soon.

Natural Solutions For Joint Pain Relief

by Manu Kalia on January 1, 2012

Ayurvedic (East Indian holistic medical system) perspective on bone, joint, muscle or nerve pain or injury.

Ayurveda treats musculo-skeletal problems holistically, taking into account the whole physiology, psychology and physical presentation of the person and the problem. The goal of the treatment is to restore homeostasis and to bring the person back to their natural psycho-physiological baseline or constitution.

Treatment is based on bringing the disturbed Dosha (Energetic principles that govern all biological processes in the body – Vata, Pitta and Kapha respectively) back into a balanced state.  This is achieved by diet, lifestyle, Marma (Ayurvedic Acupressure) massage with herbal oils, use of herbal poultices, Nadi Svedan (herbal steam treatments), herbal oil dhara (oil dripping) treatment on the affected body parts, herbal formulations and Panchakarma (detoxification and rejuvenation therapies).

The focus is on opening up blockages in micro-channels of the injured tissues, to remove toxins or metabolic waste products from these tissues, to improve metabolic capacity of the injured tissue for proper uptake and assimilation of nutrients and to improve macro and micro digestion of the whole system.  Opening up of channels facilitates flow of Prana or Qi or energy.   Prana is the cellular intelligence that controls proper movement and functioning of the whole system.   Removal of blockages also allows for proper circulation at the micro-cellular level providing nutrition and removal of metabolic waste products.    With right movement of Prana and circulation the tissue is given an optimal environment for recovery.

Easy ways to lose weight

by Manu Kalia on December 25, 2011

In this article we will go the following questions:

What foods can help you lose weight?

Are cold drinks bad for digestion and metabolism?

How can Kitchadi help you lose weight?

What is a Kapha reducing diet?

1.  Drink only warm water, no ice period.  Ayurveda believes cold drinks and foods overtax the digestion resulting in slowing down of metabolism.

2.  Drink 1 glass of warm water in every morning with 1 teaspoon of honey + 10 drops of apple cider vinegar.  Honey has dry, astringent, scraping and heating qualities and helps cut fat and mucous.  Apple cider vinegar helps improve metabolism.

3.  Ayurveda doesn’t advise salads or raw foods.  Ideally a vegetarian diet with cooked vegetables.  Raw foods and salads result in overload on the digestive fire, resulting in digestive problems and slowing down of the metabolism.

4.  Ayurveda recommends a Kapha soothing diet as an easy way to lose weight.

Why take Herbs?

by Manu Kalia on December 25, 2011

Benefits of taking herbs for health and fitness…

Herbs have been used to treat disease, promote health and used as a food source throughout human history.  Ancient medical systems such as Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine and Western Herbalism have thousands of years of experience treating disease and maintaining health and wellness.  These systems have used scientific inquiry with experiential knowledge to learn how diet, lifestyle, environment and herbal therapies affect human beings.

Herbal medicine is an important pillar of health and is currently being used by billions of people throughout the world.   The World Health Organization estimates that 80 percent of the world’s population continues to use herbal medicine for health care.  Even in the US, surveys have found that nearly half of all Americans use herbs.   Though this contemporary use of herbs in the US has become more accepted in the past 25 years or so, there are still a lot of misconceptions and concerns when it comes to using herbs.

There are many good reasons to take herbal products to supplement your health.  The best reason is the fact that herbs and herbal products have been used for thousands of years, throughout the world by various civilization and contemporary cultures while providing real benefit and an excellent safely record.   All herbs considered to be poisonous or toxic by FDA are not available to the public for use.   According to a 174-page report just published in the National Poison Data System, in 2008 there were zero deaths across America by vitamins, minerals, amino acids or herbal supplements.

Compare this to the 100,000 or so Americans killed every year due to pharmaceuticals alone.  Aspirin and aspirin containing products alone account about 30,000 deaths per year.  After heart disease and cancer, Iatrogenic death, or medicine induced death is the third leading cause of death in the US today.

Natural solutions for Chondromalacia Patella

Keralafunbe: hi Mr. Manu. My doctor diagnosed me with chrondomalacia knee. It happened because i used to kneel down a lot at work. I do not have any pain but I am not able to walk or take the stairs or use my knee i used to before. Which exercise do u recommend for me to do to strengthen my muscles. I do not want worst the thing doing something wrong..

Manu: I am not sure why you are unable to walk or use stairs if you don’t have any pain. What is limiting you from walking, stiffness? weakness?  For strengthening focus on the non-weight bearing exercises I discussed in my video.   Pick exercises that avoid bending and straightening of the knee.  Doing the exercises with the knee straight will avoid irritation caused by the patella gliding up and down in the intercondylar groove of the femur.
