What are some tips on strengthening the actual knee joint?
Resistance exercises focus on strengthening the muscles around the joint and if the muscles are strong the joint moves properly and is able to take compressive, shear and torsional load more effectively. Load bearing exercises can also help joint proprioception and the overload placed on the joint results in increased joint, intra/ extra articular ligament, articular cartilage and meniscus strength.
In addition to strengthening exercises, it’s also very important to work on maintaining optimal joint mobility. Lack of joint mobility can result in injury and poor function. It’s essential to do regular mobility exercises that take the joint through it’s full range of motion.
